APPLE PIE in the Sky SAMPLER QUILT ALONG

Join us..

Each Thursday for the next 12 weeks we will demonstrate one of the blocks in the quilt pictured.  Choose your own fabric collection!  Use up your stash!  We love scrappy!  You will have 13 blocks when you are finished.  Sampler quilts are a great way to improve and practice your skills!

AND DON'T FORGET TO EMAIL US YOUR BLOCK PICTURES EACH WEEK SO WE CAN POST THEM!  WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE WHAT YOU ARE SEWING!

Fabric requirements:
Finished quilt measurement as pictured is 65"x 65"  
Finished Block size is 12" x 12"
Background - 2 7/8 yards if you want to put your blocks on point as shown (2 1/8 yards if don't).  If you choose a different fabric for the corner/border blocks you will need 1 1/8 yards for those large triangles.

Approximately 16 Fat Quarters or similar in yardage.
        Yes the squares are all small enough to use a Layer Cake - but you will need approximately 1.5- 2 yards in Fat Quarters to go with it.  The Basket block is the largest at 8.25" and you would need a fat quarter if you want to have the base match.

1 Yard for the Red Sashing
1/4 yard for the Green Squares in the Sashing
5/8 yard for binding

And you may want to add borders to your quilt.......

First Block up of course is the.......

APPLE PIE

I have used the software program EQ7 to design this sampler quilt.

For the Apple Pie Block cut the following:

• Flying Geese Green Squares cut 2 squares measuring 5.25" square
• Flying Geese White Squares cut 8 squares measuring 2 7/8" square
• Center yellow square cut one 4.5" square
• Flower side coral petals cut 4 rectangles measuring 2.5" x 4.5"
• Flower side white background rectangles cut 4 measuring 2.5" x 4.5"

Note All Seams are 1/4"  With right sides together, stitch one 2.5 " x 4.5" coral rectangle to one 2.5" x 4.5" white rectangle on the 4.5" side.  Repeat to make 3 more units.  Press seams to the background/white.  Your units should each measure 4.5" square.

Now for the Skill Builder.  Flying Geese the Quick Way!  Click on the pictures for a larger view. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each 2 7/8" white square with a pencil.

Place one white 2 7/8" square on opposite corners of the large 5 1/4" green squares.  Your squares will overlap a bit. Sew a 1/4" seam along each side of each pencil line from corner to corner.  Yes right through the overlapping squares.  

Using your rotay cutter and ruler, cut on the pencil line separating the two units.  Press the seams towards the  white squares. You will now have 4 units that resemble hearts.

Now place the remaining 2 7/8" squares on the bottom corner of each "heart" unit with the pencil line in the center.  Stitch 1/4" on each side of the pencil line.   Rotary cut through the unit on the pencil line after stitching.

Close up.

Walaaaaa! 8 FLYING GEESE!  Press the seams to the white triangles. Trim off the dog ears and TRUE up your units.  I always TRUE UP as I go along.

Sew one Flying Geese unit to the bottom of another unit.  Press the seams towards the top unit.  Each sewn square should measure 4 1/2" square.   If you have one - like I did - that is a smidgen narrow - mark that unit so that you can allow for the difference in your seam. 

Almost done!  Place each sewn unit in the correct placement.  Stitch the units together in rows vertically- the first 3 top to bottom.   Nestle seams together and match up points and seams where they meet.  You will now have 3 rows.  Press the seams on the two side rows towards center block.   For the center section, press seams outwards towards the coral floral squares.  Stitch the 3 rows together.  Your completed block should measure 12 1/2" square.

And you have it..... The Apple Pie Block

Wedding Gifts!  This quilt pattern is Norma Jeane designed by Basicgrey.  The fabric collection is Little Black Dress also designed by Basicgrey.   Kristin used charm packs instead of cutting the squares individually.  She ended up with an 8 inch square - just a little larger than the pattern.  Kristin made two of these quilts for family wedding gifts.  This quilt was quilted by the amazing artist Leisha Farnsworth.

 Close up of the wonderful paisley quilting.  Leisha does this all free hand - no computerized quilting for her.  We love her work! I believe there are 3 other prints added in there from Kristin's stash.

 And the favorite part of this quilt is the Cuddle Ivory Minky on the back.  Perfect for those Utah winters - and springs - And falls.  HAHA
