APPLE PIE IN THE SKY QUILT ALONG BLOCK 10

Blueberry Pie

This is one of my favorite blocks in this quilt along.  I couldn't decide whether to put a print in that center star or leave it white.  I ended up choosing white.  You may choose to have a print for the inside star.  You can also have the same print in the center which would really form a nice star.  Below are a couple of options so you can see the difference.

Cutting Instructions:
  • Cut 1 print square measuring 4 1/2" square for the center patch
  • Cut 8 print (red) rectangles measuring 2 1/2" x 4 1/2"
  • Cut 4 white/background squares measuring 2 7/8" square
  • Cut 20 white/background squares measuring 2 1/2" square (if you choose to have your center star be a print then cut 8 prints squares and 12 white/background squares)
  • Cut 4 print (yellow) squares measuring 2 7/8" square
  • Cut 4 print (yellow) squares measuring 2 1/2" square

Sew half-square triangles using the four white/background and four print (yellow) 2 7/8" squares.  You know the drill.  Draw a diagonal line on the back of the white square.  With right sides together, sew 1/4" away along each side of the drawn line. Chain stitch the units.   Cut along the drawn line.  Press open with seams towards the print .
Trim of the dog ears and true up to 2 1/2" if you need to.  There should not be much to trim.
Piece the corner units first.  Lay out the corner pattern - 2 half-square triangles, one white/background 2 1/2" square and one print (yellow) 2 1/2" square.  Sew the white/background square to one of the half-square triangles.  Sew the other half-square triangle to the yellow square.  Press the seams towards the squares. Watch to maintain corner block pattern ( I had to unpick my first square).
Next sew those two units together.  Press seam towards the print square.  Make 3 more corner squares.  Set aside.

Next is the little "V" section block.  Draw a diagonal line on the remaining 2 1/2" squares. You may choose to use a tape guide instead if you would like - just make sure you are accurate.   Select two 2 1/2' x 4 1/2" rectangles.  Place one of the white/background squares at the top of each rectangle, with the drawn lines forming a "V".   Or make sure you stitch them in that direction.
Stitch directly on the drawn lines or down the center of the white square.  Trim 1/4" away from the line, forming a seam.   Press the seam on one unit up and the seam on the other unit down or in the opposite direction.

Repeat the same process, only place the 2 1/2" square at the base of the rectangle.  Keep the diagonal in the same direction as the top triangle.  Sew along the drawn lines. Trim. Press.  THIS is where you would use the print squares if you want your block to have a print star.

You should have created a chevron.  As you can see the seams are pressed in the opposite directions.
Sew two rectangles units together forming a V.  Press seam to the side. You should have a 4 1/2" finished square.  Make 3 more units.
Almost finished.  Arrange the pieced squares and center patch in the Blueberry Pie pattern.  Sew together in rows.  As you can see, I have sewn the right side together.  Press the side row seams towards the top and bottom yellow squares (not as you see in my picture since I changed my mind when sewing the blocks together).   Press the center row seams towards the center patch.   Nestle those seams together, pin,  and sew the three rows together.  Press final seams towards the center.

Block will measures 12 1/2" square.

And there it is
Blueberry Pie
( some Razzleberry pie would be good about now)

Now for the fun

APPLE PIE IN THE SKY QUILT ALONG BLOCK 9

Are we really at week 9?   A peek at all 9 blocks.
Take a quick picture of your 9 blocks.  Even if it is just with your phone.  What colors do you need to include more of?  I really need to add some other green and some more of the main print.  Now would be the time to adjust those last few blocks.  These 9 sampler blocks would make a great table quilt.

I will be putting my blocks on point.  I can also see that there are a few busy blocks that will need their own corner :)  If you are just beginning, here is the link to Block 1 .

Block 9 (Now that we have stole her thunder) is.......

 Key Lime Pie

This is another easy block.  Much easier than it looks.  And you should be able to stitch this up quickly.

 Cutting Instructions:

  • Cut 1 white/background strip 2 1/2" x 20 1/2"  for corner squares (Or eight 2 1/2" squares)
  • Cut 1 print strip 2 1/2" x 20 1/2" for corner squares (or eight 2 1/2" squares)
  • Cut 1 print (yellow) square measuring 4 1/2" for the block or star center patch
  • Cut 1 white/background square measuring 5 1/4" square for the star points
  • Cut 1 print square measuring 5 1/4" square for the star points
  • Cut 2 print (red) squares measuring 4 7/8" square for larger star points

Let's begin with the easiest sections - little four patches.  Stitch the white/background 2 1/2" strip to the print 2 1/2" strip.  Press the seam to the print.  Cross cut into (8) 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" patches.
Nestle seams together and sew two 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" patches together forming a four patch.  Obviously prints and backgrounds are opposite.  Press and set aside.

Cross cut the 5 1/4" white/background and print squares into 4 triangles each. Total 8 triangles.
Cross cut the two print 4 7/8" squares once on the diagonal creating 2 triangles from each square.
There is no better way to do this!  Lay out the triangles in the pattern that you need.  I tried to cheat and sew this patch together with half-square triangles, but after two tries, I ended up with two colors on the wrong side. Notice they are all going in the same direction.
First stitch the smaller print and white/background triangles together.  Press seams to the print. Then sew that patch to the larger right angle triangle, forming a 4 1/2" square.  Press seams to the larger triangle.

Arrange your squares into the block pattern.  Sew squares together in rows.  Press the outside rows seams towards the center block.  Press the center row seams to the outer blocks.   Another brave picture of the back of the block.
And there it is.....the lovely Key Lime Pie
(Which is also one of my favorite desserts)

Now for the fun

Congratulations again to Ansje !

Winner of a $10 gift certificate to Sisters & Quilters!

Ansje's wonderful All Hallows Block.  That orange is fabulous!
Jeanenne made two blocks.  I like the lighter value of green in her block. Nice contrast. Thanks Jeanenne!
Leisha's All Hallows Block.  Again I love the contrast in value.  I think the framing of the star patterns stands out more.  Lovely.

Thank you ladies for sending in your blocks.  Any others......keep them coming!

Happy Sewing!

APPLE PIE IN THE SKY QUILT ALONG BLOCK 8

All Hallows

I love this block.  Don't let it scare you! This block is a repetition of skills you have already learned.  The first part is soooooooo easy. Just a few more half-square triangles than you have done before.   Maybe we should have called this sampler quilt a lesson in half-square triangles.
You will need to look at the above picture or the end picture when you lay out your half-square triangles.  LOL.  Guaranteed to sharpen the mind!

Cutting Instructions:
  • Cut 2 white/background squares measuring 5 3/4" square
  • Cut 2 white/background squares measuring 2 7/8" square
  • Cut 3 Red (your print) squares measuring 5 3/4" square
  • Cut 2 Red (your print) squares measuring 2 7/8" square
  • Cut 3 Green (your print) squares measuring 5 3/4" square

  •  First draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the two 2 7/8" white squares.  With right sides together match up one white 2 7/8" square and one red 2 7/8" square.  Repeat with the second set.
  • Then draw 2 crossing diagonal lines on the two 5 3/4" white squares and the two 5 3/4" green (your lighter color print) squares.  With right sides together match up one green and one white square, one red and one white square, and two sets of green and red squares.

For the 2 7/8" squares sew 1/4" seam along each side of the drawn pencil line.  Cut along the diagonal line.  Press the half-square triangles open and trim the dog ears.  The half-square triangles should measure 2 1/2" square.

Just like the Bear's Paw block we are making 8 half-square triangles out of two squares.  Sew 1/4" seam on each side of the drawn pencil line.  There are stitches in there.  Click on the picture if you need a closer look.

Remember to make the first cuts at the center mark of 2 7/8" - first vertically and then horizontally.  Just like the square on the right.   Keep the squares together and then cut on the drawn pencil lines.  Do this to all 4 sets of squares.   I separated these so you could see the cuts.  Press those little half-square triangles open and trim the dog ears.  These half-square triangles should be 2 1/2" square.
Arrange the 36 half-square triangle squares into the All Hallows pattern.  Maybe we could get a 5th grader to help! Do I have then in the right order?  I had to check twice.  I believe I even talked to myself.

Sew the half-square triangles together in rows.  Remember to press  the seams in each row in opposite directions.  We want these to nestle together when we sew the rows together.  Sew the rows together, pressing as you go along.  Press the row seams to the sides.  The block should measure 12 1/2" square.

And there you have it.............ALL HALLOWS

This block would make a beautiful quilt.  I think if you placed the blocks next to each other you would get pinwheels in each corner.

Now for the fun

I have received one block so far.
Thank you to Jeanenne!  This is such a fun block.  I think this would also make a fun quilt - just baskets.

Just in......Ansje just sent in this block.  Love it!  Fun basket.

I know you are out there sewing up a storm :)  I know...it is graduation, vacation, and gardening time.  Send me your pics when you can!

I will add them right here ...............

Remember the Broken Wheel Quilt Block we did a few weeks ago?  I made a 9" finished block into a baby quilt using the Noteworthy fabric collection by Sweetwater.  So sweet.  This kit is available in our shop.

I will post new pictures after Leisha quilts her magic - she always improves my quilts!

Happy Sewing and have a great week!
